To Travel or Not to Travel: Should You Travel Right Now?

If you’re watching the state of the travel industry and wondering “to travel or not to travel,” this post is for you.

With everything happening right now, it’s a valid question — but before making that decision, we need to look at ourselves as travelers first.

The travel industry is in a fragile state right now. Between the government shutdown, TSA workers going several weeks without pay, global conflict, civil unrest, airport congestion, and ongoing underfunding across aviation. There’s a lot happening at once.

And while it may make sense to limit travel, that’s not always realistic or even possible.

So instead of asking “should I travel?” the better question might be:

“How am I showing up as a traveler right now?”

Travel Requires More Right Now

Traveling, period, requires a certain level of self-awareness, tolerance, and adaptability.

Right now, it requires even more.

The moment you book a trip, you should expect one thing above all else: unpredictability.

Once you accept that anything can go wrong, you’re better equipped to handle it when it does.

Preparation isn’t just about packing. It's about mindset.

Ask yourself:

  • Can you adapt when things don’t go as planned?

  • Can you remain patient in stressful environments?

  • Can you be respectful to the people around you—gate agents, TSA workers, crew members, and fellow travelers?

Because that same mindset carries over into your destination as well.

If the answer is yes, you’re in a position to move through travel with a level of ease, even when things aren’t perfect.

And If It’s Not You…

If you’re someone who:

  • lashes out at gate agents over delays outside of their control

  • complains about cancellations tied to larger global issues

  • arrives late to the airport and then blames everyone else

  • expects other travelers to accommodate your lack of preparation

Then this may not be the right time for you to be traveling.

It’s already difficult navigating travel on a good day.

Now imagine doing that while also dealing with staffing shortages, operational issues, and people who are simply trying to do their jobs under pressure—some without even being paid.

Even When You Do Everything Right…

Even when you plan properly, things can still go wrong.

Delays happen. Cancellations happen. Changes happen.

That doesn’t mean you can’t feel frustrated, but how you respond will determine your overall experience.

Before you even get to the airport, ask yourself:

  • Is this trip a necessity or a luxury?

  • Can I cancel or adjust with minimal loss?

  • Does traveling right now make sense for me?

Because at the end of the day, travel is a choice for some people. The people assisting you don’t always have that same choice.

How to Move Through Travel Right Now

There are a few things you can do to prepare yourself:

  • Get travel insurance

It’s often overlooked, but it matters more than ever

  • Stay informed

Monitor airline updates and airport conditions

  • Follow instructions

Gate agents, crew, TSA, and CBP are there to guide you

  • Be present and aware

    Pay attention to your surroundings

  • Be flexible

Plans may change. Be ready to adjust

A Final Thought

I’m a strong advocate for traveling the world.

But it’s just as important to understand when to travel and how.

Ask yourself:

  • Am I contributing to the situation, or making it more difficult?

  • If I do travel, how can I move through this experience with ease?

  • Am I being mindful of the space I take up in airports, on flights, and at my destination?

Because right now, the most important thing you can bring with you when you travel…

is awareness.
